Tenerife’s Honey Competition 2012
The Tenerife Cabildo has recently announced the 16th edition of the Regional Honey Competition, organised by Casa de la Miel.
The councillor for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries – José Joquín Bethencourt – explained that the event is the biggest in the whole of Spain and has made huge progress in the enhancement and dissemination of the top quality honey produced in Tenerife and throughout the rest of the Canary Islands.
The upcoming contest will be held between October 23rd and 25th, with prizes being awarded one month later on November 24th – the same day that the XVI Regional Beekeeping Meeting and the XII Beekeeping Technical Conference will take place.
The honeys submitted into the competition must be from areas designated for beekeepers and whose holdings are registered with the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Canaries.
The samples must fall into one of the following categories: unifloral, mutlifloral, costal (located below 600m), mountainous (between 450m and 1,250m) or summit (above 1,100m).
Last year there were 94 samples entered into the competition – 58 from Tenerife, 24 from La Palma, three from La Gomera, three from El Hierro and Two from Gran Canaria.
