Just inland from Los Cristianos is the beautiful village of Arona. Although it shares its name with the municipality which includes some of Tenerife’s most lively resorts, Arona is a sleepy, typically Canarian village.
Surrounded by fragrant pine trees and set against the backdrop of imposing mountains it is also wonderfully scenic. Furthermore, Arona’s locality means that it offers those staying in nearby Los Cristianos or Playa de las Americas an ideal way of combining a lively beach holiday with a natural retreat.
Perfect for those who enjoy walking holidays, Arona has a myriad of footpaths which lead from the village into the hills which encircle it. Even for the most casual of walkers the trail to the famous Barranco Ravine is well worth the effort, as is the easy to follow trail to Roque de el Conde, the table-topped mountain which lies behind the town. En route, the shade from the pines offers a welcome spot for a refreshing drink or spot of lunch, as well as offering some respite from the warm Tenerife sun.
For a less strenuous visit to Arona take advantage of the traditional way of life in the town’s shady Plaza de Christo de la Salud. Here, the houses that line the square overflow with colourful flowerpots and window boxes and the serene pavement cafés offer the perfect place to while away the hours over a leisurely lunch.
The unhurried ambience and peaceful environment allow visitors to completely unwind and soak up the tranquillity of village life. The nightlife in Arona is similarly low-key with a handful of small bars and atmospheric restaurants. Although the restaurants may be understated many serve international as well as traditional food with typical Canarian hospitality and offer an alternative to the more energetic nightlife of other resorts in the area.
