Lucha Canaria or Canarian wrestling is a popular sport in the Canary Islands and is very much part of the islands’ folk culture.
It is thought that the original inhabitants of the Canaries, the Guanches, may have bought it to the islands from Morocco.
The two wrestlers start the fight in the middle of a sand circle and try to throw their opponents off balance. The winner is the wrestler who wins two falls by making his opponent touch the floor with any part of the body other than the feet.
Lucha Canaria Techniques
Grasp – the wrestler may grasp and part of the opponent’s body to push or pull them off balance.
Block – a wrestler can block an opponent’s move and use his strength to unbalance them.
Deflect – a wrestler can use his body to defelect an opponent’s attack and use that momentum to put them off balance.
Illegal moves include punching, hitting and biting.
