The major tournaments include the Masters, U.S. Open, British Open, and PGA Championship and the competitors are kept busy throughout the year by the multitude of tours including the European Tour, Championship Tour and the PGA Tour. For those with slightly less ability but just as much enthusiasm there are literally millions of good quality clubs and courses throughout the world. As the game has become more accessible throughout the twentieth century the exclusive snobbery and downright bigotry of the golf scene has evaporated to create an inclusive sport where anyone can become a champion.
Modern Golf and the Golf Holiday
Although Britain has a thriving golfing community, with some of the best courses anywhere it does suffer from the worst excesses of the north European climate. For many the prospect of weekend's uninterrupted golf is often destroyed by the inclement weather and this disruption can be disappointing and extremely frustrating. This frustration is quite probably the reason golf has taken off in such a big way in warmer countries like Spain and Portugal. In particular the holiday island of Tenerife has become a number one destination with golfers from all over the world. The wonderful climate, excellent accommodation and fantastic range of courses make Tenerife a veritable golfing heaven.
