Las Palmas
Las Palmas is the capital of Gran Canaria, and this is where you can find most of the historical buildings and museums.
Las Palmas lies in the northeastern corner of Gran Canaria, and is located about 20 km from the airport. Las Palmas is reached by the motorway (autopista) GC-1. Buses from most major cities on the island will take you to Las Palmas. The main bus stations are located in Parque San Telmo and Parque Santa Catalina.
The capital can also be reached by boat, ferry and cruise ships. The harbour, Puerto de la Luz, is close to Parque Santa Catalina and El Muelle shopping center. Ferries to the other canarian islands and Cadiz, mainland Spain, arrives at this harbour.
The 2,5 km long beach that stretches along the north-eastern side of Las Palmas is one of the most popular parts of the city. There's a very nice beachpromenade next to it where you can relax on one of the many cafés and restaurants, and much of the nightlife happens here.

Cathedral
Vegueta is the area where most of the historic buildings and museums are located, and you should try to visit if you have the chance.
Other places of interest here are Cathedral de Santa Ana. The building was started at the end of the 1400s and wasn't finished untill the beginning of this century.
Casa de Colon is the house where Christopher Columbus stayed before he went on his first voyage to the 'New World'. Today it is a museum dedicated to his travels and explorations. The museum is situated in the Vegueta district, and worth a visit if you are nearby.

Triana is a very popular shopping street close to Vegueta and Parque San Telmo. It belongs to the old part of the city and the architecture here is some of the best in the city.
