Güimar Tenerife
Up until recently the valley of Guimar was an unremarkable area of rural farmland with the usual selection of vineyards, avocado fields and banana plantations. That was until its mysterious pyramids attracted the interest of the author and world famous explorer Dr Thor Heyerdahl.
Dr Heyerdahl, who has carried out extensive research on similar structures in Mexico, Peru and ancient Mesopotamia, was intrigued by photos of the site that showed large stone structures similar to the ones in the Americas. He has established an exhibition of his research, housed in a historic local building, and welcomes visitors to explore these strange constructions and come to their own conclusions about the pyramids' origins - mysteries of a forgotten civilization or a farmer's rubbish pile?
