Activities
Relax on the beach or do a number of different watersports in Puerto Rico. Enjoy yourself with other tourists on the beach in Playa del Inglés, relax on the more quiet beach in San Agustín, or enjoy the caribbean sand on the manmade beach in Anfi del Mar Hideaway and take a walk through the dunes in Maspalomas.
Rent a Car
Rent a car and drive around the island. Visit beaches where you can be almost alone, or find some of the small and beautiful villages inland. Learn more about the guanches in one of the archeological sites or in a museum. Go to one of the big shopping centres in Las Palmas, or to a local market in one of the villages like Teror.
Explore the mountain regions on the middle of the island. Sometimes in winter you can stand in snow on Pozo de las Nieves and look down at the beach in Maspalomas. Visit the picturesque village of Tejeda, with white houses clinging on to the hillsides, or the little village of Artenara which is situated high up in the mountains and has a spectacular view of the surrounding mountaintops.
Restaurants
You can eat all kinds of food here; there are almost as many different restaurants and bars in the south as there are tourists. But try some of the local cooking too. Paella and tapas are typical spanish meals that are popular in Gran Canaria, but there are many canarian specialities that are worth a taste. Papas arrugadas con mojo are potatoes with a special sauce. Some of the sauces can be a bit spicy, and others are not. Sancocho is a very good fishstew, and thick soups are also popular.
