Tenerife's annual Clean Sea Campaign is about to begin. Now in its fourth year, the campaign aims to clean up the island's coastline.
Starting on July 17th at Puertito du Güίmar the cleanup will continue on August 21st at Candelaria before ending on the 4th of September at San Marcos beach in Icod de los Vinos.
It is hoped that the campaign will highlight the importance of protecting and conserving marine biodiversity as well as keeping the coastline in optimum condition. The cleanup is looking to raise awareness amongst locals and tourists alike.
The work involved in the campaign contributes greatly towards marine conservation and improves the overall condition of the beach so that each area can provide refuge and rest for a large variety of animals and plant life.
Last year's campaign fronted by public company IDECO in collaboration with Santiago del Teide's voluntary fire service, community associations, Club de Surf "Punta Blanca", the Association of Businessmen and Commercial Companies and one hundred local volunteers, saw an astonishing five hundred kilos of rubbish cleared from the beaches and coastline.
At the end of the clean up a number of rescued turtles were released back into the sea. This year's campaign will see workshops on returning turtles to their natural environment held at the Centro de Recuperaciόn de Fauna Silvestre "La Tahonila" through Fundaciόn Neotrόpico.
The 2010 campaign will start clearing the beach at ten in the morning and will continue for four hours.
