More than 930,000 tourists visited the islands last month, a huge increase of 22.4% in comparison to the same month last year, according to the regional Department of Tourism. These figures make February 2011 the best month for tourism throughout the Canary Islands since 1996.
Tenerife continues to be the most popular of the islands with 332,694 visitors this year, , followed by Gran Canaria with 289,573 visitors, an increase of 19% and 18% respectively, in comparison to that of 2010. The largest individual increase was seen in Fuerteventura, where visitor numbers for February were 47% higher than last year.
These figures were announced at German travel trade show, ITB Berlin by the president of the Canary Islands, Paulino Rivero, who declared that the forthcoming summer season was going to be very successful.
