Ten of Tenerife's most well-known beaches have been given the Blue Flag award. The award is given annually by the Foundation for Environmental Education to beaches and marinas found to be meeting standards of environmental conditions and offering a range of facilities.
Blue Flag status is awarded to beaches in over 30 countries throughout Europe, South Africa, New Zealand, Canada and the Caribbean. Not only do beaches have to meet safety and water quality standards to be awarded the Blue flag status, but they must also comply with general services and standards of environmental management.
This year's Blue Flag status has been awarded to the beaches of El Médano, Leocadio Machado and La Tejita in Granadilla de Abona, Las Vistas and El Camisόn in Arona, Troya I-II (Américas I-II) in Adeje, La Arena in Santiago del Teide, El Socorro Los Realejos, Playa Jardín in Puerto de la Cruz and La Arena (Mesa del Mar) in Tacoronte.
Each of the beaches has something to offer - some have golden sands, some black, some have wind and waves for water sports while others have tranquil waters safe for children. Many of the beaches offer a wide range of services including showers, sun beds and umbrellas for hire, toilets, disabled access, rental of sports equipment, telephone, bars and restaurants. Other beaches offer alternative services such as parking, camping or a nudist area. In all, the ten beaches have something different to offer and amongst them there is something to suit all needs.
Tenerife's Blue Flag beaches have now put the island on the list of best destinations in the world.
