On Wednesday 30th January, Nauzet Celeste Cruz Melo was crowned this year's Queen of the Santa Cruz Carnival, with a spectacular glittering costume entitled "The Golden Age".
The Gala to Crown the Carnival Queen is a pivotal event within the programme of festivities. It is broadcast to numerous countries around the world, with television channels battling to capture every minute of the entertainment. This year over 8,000 people turned out to see who would be crowned Queen - traditionally a pretty woman from the island, in a spectacular costume which is sponsored by a private company and usually weighs more than a hundred kilos.
As well as a Queen, four "Queens of Honour" were chosen - Lavinia Mendoza Hernández in first place, followed by Alicia Retuerto Barrera (Second), Tamarit Raimondez González (Third), and Gemma González Rodríguez (Fourth).
Carnival celebrations continue until the 10th February.
