In its quest to encourage holiday-makers to discover the gastronomy of the island, the Tenerife Cabildo has collaborated with Turismo de Tenerife to organise several local food promotions. The event is in conjunction with the island's diversification project which aims to give both tourists and residents the opportunity to discover new food and places.
In support of the Muestra Gastronómica, 16 local bars and restaurants joined together in Tegueste, to participate in the gastronomy event which featured the sweet potato as the themed vegetable. Tegueste is a small traditional town situated in the municipality of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, which features historic buildings, paved streets and beautiful plazas.
Future events will focus on other traditional Canarian foods, such as chestnuts, wine, almonds, honey and cheese which tourism chefs want to put back on the international menu. The event in September will take place between the 13th and the 26th in Santiago del Teide, focusing on garlic as the theme.
Tenerife is home to some fantastic Canarian restaurants that attract visitors such as Simply Red singer Mick Huncknall who ate in a traditional Canarian restaurant during his stay on the island.
