Night of San Juan

The magical summer solstice will be celebrated in numerous towns across Tenerife with traditional beach bonfires on 23rd June, the night of San Juan.
Although celebrations vary from place to place, the theme is always on fire and rituals symbolic of leaving problems behind (by burning old objects) and looking positively to the future. In the north of the island, the celebrations include fireworks and fireballs made from sacks of sawdust. In Icod de los Vinos, they burn "hachitos" (brightly coloured wooden emblems), creating a brilliant visual display in the darkness.
At daybreak on the 24th, a traditional goat dip takes place in the harbour and at Playa Jardín in Puerto de la Cruz. Contributing to the lively atmosphere on the 23rd are musical and artistic performances by acclaimed artists and folk groups. Visitors as well as locals are welcome to join in the festivities - each year the night of San Juan sees many people attend the event, originally celebrated by the Guanches.
