8th Blue flag for Socorro Beach
The Blue flag has yet again been awarded to Socorro beach on the North coast of Tenerife. The local council have been praised for its efforts to maintain the very high standards of cleanliness and improved services.
Socorro Beach with its crystal clear waters and strong north easterly winds is one of the best surfers' beaches in Tenerife, and is a big favourite for the local public and the visiting tourists.
Located on the North coast the seas here usually attract bathers in the calmer summer months however this year the weather has been quite different with rougher seas which have become the playground of many young surfers taking advantage of the waves.
Due to its popularity the presence of the excellent Socorro beach life saving team has been a godsend as this particular beach has strong currents.
Owned and run by the non-profit organisation Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), the Blue Flag Programme is a voluntary eco-label that originated in France in 1985 and was then introduced throughout Europe, becoming a global organisation in 2001. Its panel of judges is made up of representatives of the Nations Programme for the Environment, the World Tourism Organisation, the International Life-Saving Federation and various other conservation organisations.
