The Santa Cruz Carnival is rated second only to the incredible Rio de Janerio show and thousands of people from all over the world travel to Tenerife each year for the excitement and fantastic atmosphere.
The official carnival fortnight is promoted as 15th-26th February, when the streets of Santa Cruz are packed with excited spectators, but the month-long show actually began last Wednesday evening with the presentation of candidates for the carnival queen, the junior queen and the third-age queen.
This event took place in the beautiful Garcia Santabria Park and was followed by the first phase of the children's musical comedy theatre contest at the fairground.
Wednesday February 1st will see the third-age carnival queen selected, followed by the coronation of the children's carnival queen on Sunday February 5th. After that, there is something for everyone every evening until the main carnival queen is chosen at a grand gala on Wednesday February 15th.
The main carnival parade is held on February 17th, which begins at the Plaza de la Republica Dominicana at 8pm and passes through several other areas before finishing at the Avenida Francisco La Roche.
